November was a bit of a rough month. Kara came down with croup the second week of November and missed the whole week of school. Fortunately, she started feeling better just in time for her birthday party. Unfortunately, Emily started feeling sick just as soon as Kara started feeling better. We were supposed to travel to Mimi and Papa's house to visit for Thanksgiving, but Emily was a miserable mess. She had croup, a stuffed nose, and just generally felt terrible. The worst part was the lack of sleep (for everyone). She would wake up crying at least 2-3 times a night, and nothing Mom and Dad could do could really help her. She consoled herself by going through about a box of tissues every couple of days (we went through a lot of tissues). It would have been miserable trying to travel with such a sick little girl, so we we decided to cancel our travel plans at the last minute and reschedule for Spring Break.
We took advantage of being home the long Thanksgiving weekend and got the house all decked out for Christmas. Dad even got out and hung up lights outside!

Visit to Mimi and Papa's and other November Happenings
For Thanksgiving this year, we headed down to Alabama to spend the holiday with Mom's family: Mimi, Papa, GiGi, and Uncle Trey. We also got to meet Uncle Trey's new girlfriend, Jacie. It was a whirlwind visit. We flew down on Sunday and flew out on Friday. In between, we went out to a hibachi restaurant to celebrate Kara's birthday, visited the Montgomery Zoo, visited Great Grandpa H. (who recently moved to a retirement home in Montgomery), and enjoyed some excellent home-cooking from Mimi. We were able to meet up with the McDonough family, while they we in town to visit their family.
We kept things pretty low key for November other than Kara's birthday and our visit to Alabama. We got a decent snowstorm in the middle of the month, which the girls enjoyed playing in.
As soon as we got home (and got mostly unpacked), Kara had us take out all the Christmas decorations. Kara had a great time putting up the tree and all the ornaments. Emily had fun setting stuff up, but was much more interested in playing with some of the decorations.
Recent quotes:
11/15: "I like Kara. Her my best friend." -Emily
11/15: "I love spending time with you, Dad." -Emily
Kara to Mom: "Do you know who the real Santa is? Because I do, and I'm looking at her and him (gesturing towards Dad)"

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!
It is definitely starting to look a lot like Christmas around here. Mommy, Daddy, and Kara got the Christmas tree set up (Kara insisted on putting the star on top) the weekend after Thanksgiving. The week after Thanksgiving, we got about 8 inches of snow in a storm and then another 5 inches of snow a couple of days later. It's also gotten quite chilly the last couple of days. The high today was about 10 deg F. Kara has enjoyed playing in the snow (when it was warm enough to play outside).
Some recent Kara quotes:
A couple of days after Thanksgiving, Mommy asked Kara if she wanted some pumpkin pie for dessert after dinner. Kara immediately replied, "Pumpkin pie and ice cream," with a big smile on her face.
During a recent snow day, Kara got a little tired of hanging out in the house with Mommy. So, after lunch Kara got her library bag out, put it around her neck and over her shoulder and said, "Goodbye. Ta-ta go see people, put shoes on".
When Daddy says "Night night," Kara replies with the proper "Good night".

Holiday fun
Kara spent Thanksgiving at Grandma and Grandpa S.'s house. Grandma and Grandpa had all their Christmas decorations out. Kara particularly enjoyed playing with Grandma's Hallmark singing snowman. We showed Kara how to push the button and make them sing. She couldn't get enough of it!
Kara had her one-year check-up with her doctor the week after her birthday. Our girl is very long and lean. Basically, Kara is always on the move - walking around and climbing on everything.
Grandpa H. had a meeting in Colorado Springs last week and was able come visit us for a day. He had a good time hanging out with Kara and enjoyed playing with her in the park. After dinner, we tried to hang out downtown to see the Parade of Lights. Unfortunately, the parade didn't start when they were supposed to (at 6:00), and we had to leave without seeing them to get Kara home in time for bedtime.
Tonight, we went to "Dessert and a Story with Santa" at the Louisville Rec Center. Um, we're going to put that in the category of "It seemed like a good idea at the time." They had some temporary tattoos, cookies, and hot chocolate. We tried to get a tattoo on Kara's cheek, but that didn't work out too well. Kara did nibble on a couple of cookies. She also sat pretty still for Santa while he read "The Night Before Christmas". She was even fairly patient while we waited in line to sit on Santa's lap; however, the actual visit with Santa did not go well. Kara sat there for about two seconds before tears started rolling down her cheeks and she started crying. We'll have to try that again next year...

The First Week Home
On Wednesday of the following week, Grandpa H. and Great-Grandma B. came up for Thanksgiving and to meet Kara. Thanksgiving was very interesting with a newborn. We had to eat in shifts. But we love her. She's so pretty.
