Spring Visit to Mimi and Papa's House

For Spring Break this year (2017) we decided to head down to Alabama to see Mimi and Papa (and Gigi and Uncle Trey!).  The week just seemed to flew by!

Montgomery Zoo
Went to see Beauty and the Beast
Meeting Trey's girlfriend, Ashley

We met up with Heather, Justin, Sean, and Robin in Auburn.  The kids had a great time playing on campus and eating pizza!

Our flight out of Atlanta was early in the afternoon, so we had time to meet up with some friends.  Uncle Trey and Ashley picked us up at the house early that morning and drove us up to Atlanta.  We were able to meet up with our friends Patrick, Akila, Amara, and their new baby Kareena and grabbed breakfast with them.  All in all, a great end to a great visit!

T-Ball and Blizzards

April was a pretty crazy month as far as the weather went.  It did the typical Colorado thing with flashes of warm weather followed by huge snow storms (our biggest storm dropped almost 2 feet of snow).  The girls and Dad were able to get out and make a pretty awesome snowman.

Kara joined a T-ball team this spring, which was her first organized team sport.  Dad volunteered to be an assistant coach (mostly just keeping the kids entertained while the head coach actually teaches the kids how to play).  Dad might be having more fun that Kara!  For Kara's Opening Day, the league put on quite a show that even Dinger (the Colorado Rockies' team mascot) attended.  So far, Kara's only had a couple of games (we had a couple of our games rained/snowed out due to bad weather),

Easter 2015

Easter in Colorado is usually a toss up as to whether you'll be celebrating in snow or in the sun.  Fortunately, the weather was great this year, so we got to do a lot of egg searching (perhaps a little too much egg hunting?), even though Easter fell a little early in the spring this year.

We got the day of Easter started off right by doing an egg hunt in the backyard.  Kara immediately went running off to look for eggs, but Emily took a more leisurely approach to egg hunting.  She opened her first egg and was pretty good with that.  We had to prompt her a bit to keep searching for eggs before Kara got them all!  Later in the morning, while Mommy, Kara, and Emily talked to Mimi and Uncle Trey on a Skype call, Dad went down the street to help hide eggs for a neighborhood egg hunt.  The girls had a great time with that one, running around with the kids and sneaking candy.  They were both crashing a bit from the sugar rush once we came home for lunch.

After lunch and quiet time, we headed down to Aunt Amy's house to meet up with Grandma and Grandpa S. for another egg hunt and Easter dinner.  After our third Easter egg hunt of the day, the girls had enough candy to last them for years!

March 2015

First of all, yes, I know I've gotten pretty lazy with the titles.  I really need to pick up my game.  Be sure to check out the videos at the end!

Other than Emily's birthday, nothing terribly exciting happened in March.  Kara has continued her Tae Kwon Do lessons and will be testing for her yellow belt pretty soon.  Her reading has been improving as well.  We think she has memorized a ton of sight words, but still gets a little frustrated when she has to sound a word out.  She's getting pretty good though!

Emily has learned to count up to 5, consistently, though we've heard her count as high as 11.  One of Emily's favorite things is to race. She'll say, "ready set 1 2 go!"  Potty training is continuing.  Emily has figured out that the potty can be a very powerful tool in delaying bedtime.  Almost every day now, she'll say, "need potty" at some point during the night-time routine.  We want to encourage her to listen her body, so we'll get her down to the potty.  Most of the time she'll do something in the potty but is always very insistent she needs to do more when we try to wrap things up.  Emily has also learned the words "my" and "mine" and applies them to pretty much everything, even Kara's toys.  For the most part Kara is pretty okay with sharing her toys with Emily, but Emily has not learned the concept of sharing....

Near the end of the month, we got a visit from Mom's side of the family: Scot and Cassie (and their babies Amelia and Bryn), Brad and Maggie, and Uncle Randy and Aunt Tracey.  It had been a long time since we'd seen all of them.  Emily thought the babies were awesome.  She helped feed the babies, change a diaper, and pet the babies hair while saying "fuzzy".  Kara, on the other hand, was excited to have people to play with and spent most of the time playing ball with Brad and Maggie.

Kid Qutoes:
(playing a card game with Mommy)
Kara: "I got a 3-4-5."
Mom: "Kara, you're not supposed to tell us what cards you have."
Kara: "Oh, I was just kidding. I don't really have those cards."  She did.

"Oh boy!" Emily's new favorite expression.

"I conjured the toy behind your ear from thin air!" Kara explaining how she did a magic trick.

Mom made chocolate chip cookies one day. They were a big hit. Here's what Emily had to say about them:

May 2014

May was a very busy month. Between Kara's first year of preschool coming to an end, Mother's Day, a trip to the circus, and lots of playing, it felt like we were always doing something.

The weather for May was pretty nice for the most part. The weekend before Mother's Day, we got out the sprinklers because it was so hot. For Mother's Day, however, we were treated to a rare May snowstorm. Only about 2-3 inches stuck to the ground, but it was a very wet snow. Perfect for a snowman!

Kara's year of preschool came to an end. Her class had a family picnic for her last day and treated all the parents to a song. All the kids are going to be coming back for the next year, so that'll be fun!

Kara and Daddy went to the circus.  It was Kara's first circus experience, but she definitely knew what to get. She started off with some cotton candy before getting a hot dog and washing it all down with a snow cone. So much junk food! Kara liked the elephants, tigers, and the tumblers, but her favorite act was the man shooting out of the cannon.  She just kept looking at Daddy while he was getting the cannon ready and saying, "I think he's going to shoot out of there! I can't believe it!"

Emily is officially a toddler and full of mischief. She gets pretty clingy when she's tired or hungry, but she is often toddling around the house trying to keep up with Kara! The girls are starting to play together, which is very nice. Emily finally cut her two top teeth and it now up to 4. She has also been working on talking. She mostly relies on the old point and grunt method of communication but occasionally throws in words like da (dog), bur (bird), Biggo (Bingo, the name of her favorite stuffed dog), aada (all done), baba (baby), peeka (Peek-a-boo), boo (boo!).

Kid quotes:
"great. u took the chicken." - text message Emily sent from Mommy's phone to Daddy.  We're still not sure how she pulled that one off.

"Oooooh, nice!" - Kara when Daddy showed her a picture of the Dream Chaser, Daddy's new project.

Spring 2014

The Colorado weather is doing its typical spring thing where it teases you with beautiful, sunny weather and then shifts back to cold and snow.

Easter was fun this year.  We started off the day with an Easter egg hunt in the backyard.  Kara immediately found her first egg and popped it open (there was a Peep inside) and got the day off to a sugar-filled start.  Emily was more interested in the birds and watching Kara run around than anything else.  Later in the afternoon, we headed over to Aunt Amy's house for another egg hunt and dinner.  Emily was kind of getting the egg hunt thing by the end.  There's always next year!

Emily is cutting her third tooth (for what seems like the fifth time), so she hasn't been sleeping very well recently.  She's also battling about her 100th cold of the season, which is fun.  Emily is starting to talk more recently.  She now says "dog", "bye bye", "Mama", and "baby".  She also developed quite a few hand signals to communicate her wishes to Mommy and Daddy.  She is also developing a very bothersome habit of throwing food (which is something Kara never did).  Most of the time she just drops her food or sippy cup off the side of her high chair, but occasionally she flings food pretty far.  We're hoping she grows out of that one soon.

Kara recently gave a presentation to her preschool classes about herself.  Mommy was able to get video of the presentation (see the videos below). Part 1 is pretty short, but Part 2 is quite long.  Fair warning.

We also did an overhaul on the backyard.  The grass mostly died last summer while we were in Florida, despite Lu's and Grandma and Grandpa's best efforts.  We hired a company to put in a new side fence, level the yard, lay sod, and install a sprinkler system.  Now we just have to upkeep!  Both girls have been enjoying playing in the grass.

Some other big news is that Daddy got a new job.  He is now working for Sierra Nevada on the Dream Chaser propulsion system.  The job is much closer to home (it's about a 10 minute commute) and doesn't require any travelling.  Let's hope the project is a success!

Kara quotes:
Mommy's hair is just black. That's not a cloud of bats, it's just Mommy's hair.

There's a boiling pot of dead skeletons in the principal's office.  You do not want to go there!

Kara plays make believe and tells stories almost non-stop these days.  A particularly interesting one started off with "a boy is reading a bedtime story with three, no, ten chapters.  It starts with a girl named Kara drawing a picture...." then she sat down and started drawing.  She continued to narrate what she was doing around the house as the chapters in the book, for quite some time.  It was pretty neat to watch!

Emily's 1st Birthday!

Emily had her first birthday, and we celebrated by all getting sick.  When we say sick, we don't mean a little sniffle, we mean a nasty stomach bug that will take you down!  Emily got the party started by waking up on Friday covered in vomit.  Mommy and Daddy thought maybe Emily had just eaten something that hadn't agreed with her.  We were wrong. On Saturday, Emily's birthday, Mom started to feel sick around noon, and Kara started throwing up shortly thereafter. Daddy was able to hold it together through Saturday, doing load after load of laundry to keep everyone with clean clothes and bedsheets.  Daddy couldn't hold out forever, though, and fell victim Sunday.  Fortunately, Mommy was starting to feel a little better by that time and was able to keep everything together.  Fun times, huh?

The following weekend, we did a re-do on Emily's birthday.  Grandma and Grandpa came up, and we called Mimi and Papa on the iPad.  Emily really enjoyed her cake.  She didn't know quite what to do with her wrapped presents, but she eventually figured out how to tear the paper (not quite fast enough for Kara, though).

Emily has now mastered walking.  She can move pretty quick these days.  She has also been working on her communication.  She can usually convey what she wants through grunting and pointing, and we think she might be close to saying her first words.  She's said something that sounds a lot like "baby" (while looking at her Baby Beluga CD case) and "here you go" (when sharing her toys).  It's amazing how fast they grow up!

Emily is 6 weeks old!

The last 6 weeks have been a bit of a blur.  Mimi came out shortly after Emily was born and helped out a lot.  Papa also came out for a week early this month.  They were here to experience some of this great Colorado weather we get during the spring - we got two large snow storms while they were here (one with about a foot of snow, another with 6 inches).  Hopefully the weather starts warming up soon!

Emily is doing great these days.  She does what babies do - eat, poop, sleep, and cry.  Mommy and Daddy are just trying to survive day to day.  She does flash us beautiful smiles often, so that's pretty great.  Also, there was something that will live forever in family lore as the Projectile Poo Incident.  Daddy is still a little gun-shy about changing diapers.  He may never recover...

Kara's doing fine adjusting to being a big sister.  She seems to act out a bit more to get attention, but we're hoping it will pass.  One day while Papa was here, he and Daddy headed down to the Children's Museum in Denver with Kara.  Kara had a great time exploring all the exhibits they had there.  Also, Mimi and Papa got Kara a tricycle for Easter.  Kara has been having a great time cruising around the neighborhood with her sweet wheels!

Easter 2013

Easter this year as quite the affair.  We had a full house with Mimi, Grandma S., Grandpa S., Aunt Amy, GG K, Cousin Jennifer, and her boyfriend J (and of course Mommy, Daddy, Kara, and Emily) coming over for Easter dinner!  Luckily, it was a beautiful spring day in Colorado, so we were able to hang out in the backyard.  Kara had a great time looking for eggs (she had an egg hunt in the morning and another in the afternoon).  Kara and Emily both cleaned up with presents and candy!  Emily, of course, was a little too small for the candy, so Kara volunteered to eat hers.

Emily is doing quite well these days.  She's getting a little bigger every day.  Some of her newborn clothes are starting to get a little tight on her.  It's amazing how fast babies grow!

And congratulations to our friends Patrick and Akila and their latest addition, Amara.  You guys are in for quite a ride, but a ton of fun!

The Chatterbox

We haven't been great about taking pictures recently, but we have a few good ones of Easter and the crazy weather we've been having!

No, the pictures aren't out of order...We had a few record high's the weekend before Easter, which prompted us to get out the sprinkler and water table...then Monday it was cold and dreary and Tues it snowed! It was odd, but Kara didn't seem fazed. :)

Kara and Mommy went on an Easter egg hunt with friends on Sat, then two at home on Sun. She had a blast finding the eggs and twirling around in her dress. She had lots of fun with G.G. K. and Grandma and Grandpa S. Who doesn't love being the center of attention? Not Kara!

Kara is really getting into her talking groove. She amazes us on a daily basis with her language skills. She must be listening to us, on some level...

Kara often says, "I don't know the word" when she's searching for the right word. A recent example went down like this:
Kara: I want some cereal
Mommy: Would you like some Cheerios?
K: No, I want the one... I don't know the word.
M: Bran flakes? Cheerios?
K: No, the ones with the soft things.
M: Marshmallows?
K: Yes! Marshmallows! I want those!

Other Kara quotes:
"Mommy, I am your friend" (April 8th)
to Mommy - "We will always be friends" and "We are best friends" - both spontaneous after taking my hand for a walk - :O (April 18th)
"It's a pretend turtle. It's not a real turtle." - after an egg from Grandma and Grandpa S. "hatched"
"Why is that so funny?" and "What is so funny?" Deadpan with questioning hands in the air, as some older children where shouting and laughing at the playground - hilarious!

Hello Spring!

Wow, what a difference a month makes!  As soon as the calendar changed to March, the weather started getting warmer.  It's been in the 60's or 70's most days this month.  Mommy and Kara have been taking advantage of the warm weather.  We hooked up the bike trailer and have been exploring the city.  Mommy and Kara also went down to the Denver zoo one day with Kara's friend Corabelle. a Kara has been having a lot of fun with gym classes and art classes.

On a less happy note, we found out that Kara is allergic to peanuts.  While eating a dinner with some peanut butter in it, Kara's hands broke out in hives.  About a week later, Mommy and Kara headed to an allergist where it was confirmed.  It's possible Kara will grow out of the allergies, but Mommy and Daddy are going to have to keep a close eye on what she's eating.

Kara Quotes:
"I want a garden with tomato plants like Eli [a little boy down that lives down the street] does.  I don't have tomato plants yet!"

"I never do anything I want to do" - and so it begins....
